P5NK - Finding Area of 2D Shapes
12th Nov 2025
This week in maths, we’ve been learning how to find the area of 2D shapes by counting squares. We found out that the area tells us how much space a shape covers on a flat surface, and each square counts as one unit.
We used multilink cubes to help us build and count the “square units.” The cubes made it really easy (and fun!) to see how shapes can look different but still have the same area.
Our favourite part was the area challenge — we had to make our own shapes when given a number of square units. For example, we tried to make as many different shapes as possible with an area of 6 square units.
Using the multilink cubes helped us see, build, and understand area in a hands-on way.
